TERRIFIED fans of The Joker have been walking out of the cinema early – because they say the movie is too dark and scary.
The controversial film, which The Sun’s Jamie East described as a “sad, brutally graphic, politically charged, unpalatable masterpiece”, is driving theatregoers out of their seats early – and they’re taking to Twitter to let other fans know.
“Walked out of the The Joker. I couldn’t do it,” wrote one, while another said she was “shaking and speechless” by the end of the movie.
Another wrote: “I’ve just walked out of the Joker. Maybe I was naive in going/didn’t realise what an origin story would be like, maybe because I live with someone with MH [mental health], it was just far too dark for me to be able to watch.”
A fourth fan said: “I walked out of the joker movie 12 hours ago and my mind and body still have not recovered” while another called it “sick, twisted, and dark”.
Other cinema-goers said they’d seen people leave the film, with one person saying: “An entire family walked out of joker last night after the joker first killed someone.”
The film has been mired in controversy since it was first screened, because critics fear the dark violence could spark copycat crimes.
Actor Joaquin Phoenix stormed out of an interview with The Telegraph after he was asked about his concerns.
It come after gunman James Holmes dressed up as the comic book villain in 2012 and opened fire at a Colorado theater’s Batman screening, killing 12 and injuring 70 others.
The police said in a statement on Friday: “The Los Angeles Police Department is aware of public concerns and the historical significance associated with the premiere of Joker.
“While there are no credible threats in the Los Angeles area, the department will maintain high visibility around theaters when it opens.”
However, it hasn’t put US audiences off. While the film only opens in the UK tonight, it’s been out since Thursday in America, where it took $13.3 million in two days.
