Shopper fury at ‘non-existent’ sales

Hundreds of shoppers have been left disappointed by “non-existent” Mothercare sales.

The retailer told KentOnline a “massive” closing down sale is beginning at its stores in Canterbury, Orpington and Bluewater today.

It was billed as a “huge” sale in which items would be “dramatically reduced, just in time for Christmas”.

But shoppers arriving at the Canterbury store in Wincheap this morning were furious to find no sign of the promised reductions.

Mum-of-two Shelley Andrews had driven about 15 miles to reach the store with her mum and baby.

She said: “I saw it on Facebook this morning that there was going to be a sale, so we’ve driven all the way from the other side of Sellindge to find that there’s absolutely nothing.

“I’m really quite annoyed that I’ve wasted my time. If they’re going to do something, they should really do it.”

The store’s car park was packed out with shoppers looking for a bargain.

Alice Sherwood, from Sturry, came to search for a discounted pram for her pregnant friend.

She said: “My friend sent me a sale message so I came to have a look, but there isn’t anything on sale at all. And no notices or anything.

“It’s hard for the staff obviously. But I guess if they’re putting messages saying they’re closing down – it’s disappointing.”

A spokesman for Mothercare previously described the sale as said “a great opportunity for customers to pick up some amazing deals as everything is reduced”.

The stores, which specialise in prams, car seats, toys, and maternity and baby clothes, are set to shut in coming months.

Mothercare, which has been a staple on the high street since 1961, has already closed 60 branches nationwide.

It has now gone into administration, and earlier this week announced it will close all of its remaining UK stores in coming weeks and months.

Mothercare has been approached for a comment.
