A Reading chippy has battered the opposition to be plaiced as one of the country’s best.
Mr Chips in Oxford Road has received the Good Food Award for Fish and Chips 2020.
The awards are given to businesses which meet a range of criteria used to select the finest chippies in the land.
The criteria includes:
- Producing fantastic fish and chips
- Ranks well against competitors
- Receives consistent positive feedback from customers
- Has a good Food Hygiene score
Owner Clarence Li said: “We really care about our food quality and so we spend a lot of time making sure the food is good quality to serve the customer.
“We also care about the relationship with the customer.
“So all the customers come and not just to get a meal or food they have a gathering with us.
“We not only care about food, we care about the people and how they feel.”
As well as the English traditional grub, the shop also serves an unusual accompaniment – bubble tea.
And the owners say the drink and fish and chips are “a perfect match”.
Owner Circle Kung said: “We are very happy because we are the only fish and shop in the town centre.
“We wanted to make a culture with fish and chips food and the drink is bubble tea.
“It’s a good match together.
“We want to make this a culture here.
“In London bubble tea is very popular, we are not only, the only fish and chip shop in the town centre, we were the first place to sell bubble tea here.
“It’s very tasty, it’s a perfect match!
“Our fish is very fresh and the chips are hand cut, fresh made for the customer.”

The judges said they had received “elevated customer feedback” about the chip shop and that it had “demonstrated exceptional levels of food quality, service and value when compared to our industry benchmarks in their category”.
The chip shop in Reading, Berkshire has a hygiene rating of five out of five.
